Massive. Open. Online. Designing Pedagogy Beyond the Classroom
What does the availability of almost all information, almost all the time, mean for education?
Considering the role of the university at a time of social, cultural and political change mediated primarily by the internet and communication technology, this meta-course will challenge students to reflect on how they learn by creating a course of their own - a massive open online course, or MOOC.
Through a combination of practical exercises in video and audio techniques in parallel the study of diverse pedagogical concepts, this course aims to equip students with the basic tools and core principles to create short but complex educational modules made, among other things, of short films.
This semester will feature a real-world case study - translating elements a forthcoming publication - a manual for urban transformation in Colombia - into a series interactive, audiovisual modules. Students will be consider their own educational experiences in crafting modules that align with changing ways to learn and communicate through emerging tools such as film and animation software.
At the end of the course, the work of the students will be reflected in the development of MOOCS that they themselves, along with other students at the ETHZ and beyond can take.
